Luppolajo is a project that starts from the cultivation of raw materials
Before being a craft brewery, Luppolajo is a farm.
All the raw materials used to produce beer are grown in the countryside. And so the malt, barley, hops and other cereals are grown at the base of all the projects carried out by the master brewers.
Hops also had a short yet intense cultivation history in Italy in the mid-19th century. The influence of the Austro-Hungarian dominion led to the birth of several breweries, along with the arrival of pioneers who created hop fields of such a high quality that they also gained recognition on German soil. With the same spirit of those first experimenters every year we take care of our hops by selecting the most attractive varieties, in order to obtain new aromas that would greatly enhance the beers produced with our hops.
Water is one of the key ingredients to brew excellent beers and its composition is of paramount importance when selecting the preferred brewing methods. We have chosen to make our recipes using an artesian well that has been used by our company since the early 1900s, in order to create a link with our region also in relation to the water.
Producing malting barley in the Po Valley was our first challenge. And it continues to be year after year. Barley growing in Italy is in fact historically concentrated in the centre and south. But our farm, founded in 1911, had already grown barley for the Wuhrer brewery in the 1930s. So, drawing on our past and, after several attempts and some failures, we managed to grow a variety that could well adapt to our climate, harsh in winter and humid in spring.
The cleaning and storage of the caryopsis are crucial for the quality of the barley malt. For this reason, every year we select only the best grains for malting. In the selection, we choose quality over quantity. This choice allows us to produce malt of a superior quality, in terms of aroma and taste, compared to that produced in the large malt houses where the other breweries normally source their malt. With the passing of the seasons, we have taken on new challenges in the field and today we are proud to be able to produce all the wheat and oats needed for our production.
